The origins of the Kenana project date back to 1972, when the Government of Sudan and Lonrho reached an agreement to study the establishment of a major sugar project. Kenana Sugar Company was formally incorporated in 1975, and construction of the factory followed. The factory was inaugurated in the early 1980s, with production subsequently expanding from the domestic Sudanese market to exports.
The Kenana agricultural estate covers a large area of irrigated land along the White Nile. Its location provides access to fertile soils and water resources suitable for large-scale sugarcane cultivation.
